ChatGPT vs Claude: Which AI Assistant Is Better for Your Small Business in 2026?

ChatGPT and Claude are the two AI assistants most small businesses end up choosing between. Both cost $20 a month for the standard paid plan, both have team plans at the same price, and both can search the web, read your files, and remember context. The differences are in what each one is built to do best.

Here's the short answer:

ChatGPT is the better all-rounder: images, voice, custom assistants, and the cheapest paid entry point.

Claude is the better tool for long documents, careful writing, and building software or automations.

If your business needs one assistant that does a bit of everything, including marketing images, pick ChatGPT. If your work is mostly reading, writing, and analyzing documents, or you want to build your own tools, pick Claude.

Executive Summary

Choose ChatGPT if:

  • You need to create images for social posts, ads, or product mockups
  • You want voice conversations, including showing it things through your camera
  • You'd like to build custom assistants (GPTs) for your team or customers
  • You want a cheap starter plan — ChatGPT Go costs less than half of Plus

Choose Claude if:

  • You work with long contracts, reports, or research and need careful summaries
  • You want finished files — documents, spreadsheets, and slide decks — not just chat answers
  • You want to build a website, app, or automation without a developer (Claude Code is included in Pro)
  • You want to connect it to tools you already use, like Google Drive, Gmail, or Notion

Price

At the standard tier, there's no difference: ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro both cost $20 a month. Claude Pro drops to $17 a month if you pay for a year up front.

The difference is at the bottom. ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month and gives you more use of the everyday model, more image generation, and the ability to build custom GPTs. Claude has no plan between Free and Pro.

At the top, both have power-user plans starting at $100 a month (ChatGPT Pro and Claude Max) for people who use AI all day.

For teams, the prices match exactly: $25 per person per month, or $20 if billed yearly, with a two-person minimum on both.

Winner: ChatGPT, for the cheaper starter plan

Images and Visuals

This is ChatGPT's clearest advantage. It can create images from a description — a social post graphic, a product mockup, a flyer background — and the paid plans make more of them, faster.

Claude does not generate photos or illustrations. It can build charts, diagrams, and interactive visuals inside the chat, and it can design simple pages and graphics, but if you need a picture, you'll need another tool.

ChatGPT's newest model, GPT-6, also builds answers with charts, buttons, and forms right in the chat, which OpenAI calls Intelligent UI.

Winner: ChatGPT

Writing and Documents

Both assistants write well. Where they differ is in how they handle big, messy work.

Claude is built around working with long material: you can give it a stack of contracts, a long report, or a folder of research, and ask it to summarize, compare, or pull out what matters. It also produces finished files — Word-style documents, spreadsheets, and slide decks — that you can edit and share, rather than text you copy and paste.

ChatGPT handles documents too, and its deep research feature is strong for questions that need many web sources. For everyday writing — emails, social captions, product descriptions — you won't notice a big gap between the two.

Winner: Claude, for long documents and finished files

Building Websites, Apps, and Automations

Both companies now sell coding tools: OpenAI has Codex, and Anthropic has Claude Code. Both are included with the paid plans.

Claude Code is included in Claude Pro at $20 a month and is designed to let you describe what you want in plain English and have it write, test, and fix the code. It's how I built CompareXY's website and iOS app.

ChatGPT's Codex is also included in Plus, with more usage on Pro, and works across ChatGPT and OpenAI's developer tools.

Winner: Claude, by a small margin, for non-developers

Custom Assistants and Team Features

ChatGPT lets you build custom GPTs: assistants with their own instructions and files that you can share with your team or publish for anyone to use. If you want a "customer FAQ bot" or a "brand voice writer" that the whole team can use, this is the easiest way to get one.

Claude's version is Projects: shared workspaces with their own instructions and files. They work well for a team, but you can't publish them as a public assistant the way you can with GPTs.

Both team plans include admin controls for managing who has access.

Winner: ChatGPT

Connecting to Your Other Tools

Both can connect to the apps your business already uses. ChatGPT calls these apps; Claude calls them connectors. Both cover the big ones, like Google Drive and Gmail, and both let teams connect internal tools on business plans.

Claude's connectors are available on every plan, including Free. ChatGPT's Free and Go plans include basic apps, with internal tools added on Plus and above.

Winner: Tie

Final Verdict

Choose ChatGPT if you want one assistant for everything — writing, images, voice, and custom GPTs — and especially if you want to start cheap with the $8 Go plan.

Choose Claude if your business runs on documents, writing, and analysis, or if you want to build your own website, app, or automations without hiring a developer.

Many small businesses end up using both: ChatGPT for images and quick everyday questions, and Claude for long documents and building. At $20 each, that's still cheaper than an hour of most freelancers.
