Welcome to CompareXY: A Smarter Way to Decide What to Buy
Why I built CompareXY, what it does today, and who it's for. A personal note on cutting through review noise with AI-powered side-by-side comparisons.

I want to talk about the problem CompareXY is built to fix, because I lived it for years before I did anything about it.
Every time I needed to buy something — running shoes, a coffee grinder, a backup drive — I'd open six tabs, scroll through twenty reviews, watch a YouTube video, ask a friend, and an hour later still feel unsure. The reviews disagreed with each other. Half of them were sponsored. The "best of" lists were updated once and forgotten. And almost none of them answered the question I actually had: between these two specific products I'm considering right now, which one fits my situation better?
CompareXY is my answer to that.
What CompareXY does
CompareXY is a free AI-powered tool that compares any two products head-to-head. You type in two things — say, "Sony WH-1000XM5" and "Bose QuietComfort Ultra" — and within seconds it gives you:
- A side-by-side breakdown across the categories that actually matter for that product type (sound quality, comfort, battery life, ANC, price)
- Key specs pulled from real product data
- A recommendation based on your priorities, with the reasoning shown
- A direct link to the better deal
You can compare any two products — even if they're not in the same category. Want to know whether a $200 espresso machine or a $200 burr grinder is the better upgrade for your home setup? Type both in. The AI figures out the right axes of comparison.
What makes it different
The shortcut explanation is "ChatGPT for shopping decisions," but that undersells it (if you want the longer technical version, here's how the comparison engine actually works). There are three things I tried hard to get right:
- Personalized weighting. You can tell CompareXY what matters to you — budget-conscious, feature-first, beginner-friendly, ecosystem fit — and it weights the comparison accordingly. The same two products can yield different recommendations for different people, which is exactly how real buying decisions work.
- Structured output, not a wall of text. Every comparison comes back as a structured table with clear winners per category, not a vague essay you have to skim. You can make a decision in under a minute.
- No SEO-bait reviews in the loop. Traditional review sites are great when they exist, but they're slow to update, narrow in coverage, and often optimized for clicks. CompareXY pulls from product data and reasons over it directly, so you can compare products that no big publication has gotten around to reviewing yet.
Who it's for
If you've ever:
- Spent an hour comparing two laptops and ended up flipping a coin
- Bought something on Amazon and wondered the next day if you should've gotten the other one
- Felt like every review site was telling you the same five products were "the best"
- Wanted a real opinion on a niche product that doesn't get covered by Wirecutter
…then this is for you.
It's especially useful for the in-between purchases — not so cheap you don't care, not so expensive you'll spend a week researching. The $50–$500 zone is where most people lose the most time to decision fatigue, and where CompareXY pays off the fastest.
What's free, what's coming
The web app is free. The iOS app is free. There's no paywall on comparisons, no daily cap, no "premium tier." Long-term, the plan is to fund this through Amazon affiliate links — when CompareXY recommends something and you buy it through our link, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That's the only business model. No ads, no data sales, no upsells.
Coming soon:
- More product categories (we currently do well across electronics, home goods, fitness, and kitchen — expanding into beauty, tools, and outdoor gear next)
- Buying guides for the most-searched product categories — like our iPhone 15 vs Pixel 8 breakdown and Dyson V15 vs Shark Stratos comparison, published right here on this blog
- A way to save and revisit your comparisons across devices
A small ask
If you try CompareXY and it saves you time, the most useful thing you can do is tell one friend who's currently agonizing over a buying decision. Word of mouth is how this grows.
And if you have a product category you wish CompareXY covered better, or a comparison feature you wish existed, email me. I read everything.
